Groom Toasts – Stay In Control

October 31st, 2009 Sam

If you genuinely forget to thank someone during your groom toast, you may be forgiven. But to say the wrong thing entirely may lead to disaster! This is probably the one single thing that most if us dread during wedding speeches.  However, I have a few pointers for you.

Toasts to the bride

The worst thing you could do during your groom toasts is to start talking about your ex-girlfriend. This may sound like a no brainer, but don’t take anything for granted – there are grooms that do it! Even if it’s to point out how wonderful your new love is compared to the old one, even in a mild teasing way, it’s a no, no…My wife would certainly not approve, particularly on her wedding day, the most important day of her life!

Don’t drink too much!

Your biggest enemy is alcohol. No matter how well prepared your groom’s speech is, drinking too much could be your  downfall. Yes, we have all got drunk at some stage, so you should all know exactly how vulnerable we are. Take my advice and steer clear of all alcohol until after your groom toasts.

The best advice for groom wedding toasts?

If you want to be in control then my advice would be plan ahead. By not planning your groom toast ahead, you are also leaving yourself wide open to a very embarrassing and awkward situation. Luckily however, there are now plenty of online sources to help you choose a decent speech, or even a funny groom speech, but just remember the advice I gave you in an earlier post on being careful with groom speech jokes.

Finally, it needs to be said that talking too quietly or rambling on for too long, won’t go down too well. Practise your groom wedding toast so you know it wont take a couple of hours to deliver! This will also boost your confidence.
