Funny Groom Speeches – Finding The Right Balance

Despite my earlier advice on avoiding jokes and alcohol, funny groom speeches are one of the great things about any wedding speech. It doesn’t mean you have to produce a work of comic genius, but a funny groom speech is sure to go down a blast with your audience – so long as it is relevant and tasteful. The last thing you want to do is offend anyone.

I tried to make mine funny but all the while I was aware of the situation and tried to be humble. I also had to consider the other wedding speakers like the father of the bride so that I didn’t pull the rug from under him or insult his daughter. Trying to be “that” funny has a way of back firing.

Here is an example of a groom speech joke that I got from a forum it may or may “not” be acceptable!

“For the last couple of years, every time I’ve been at a wedding with my grandparents and other members of the blue-rinse brigade, I’ve been putting up with them coming up to me, poking me in the ribs and saying, ‘That’ll be you next’! However, I’ve been getting my own back by doing the same to them at funerals!”

It could go either way…! ;-)

The Secret To Funny Groom Speeches

One thing I found was that by using humour, it seemed to keep everyone’s attention and engaged them emotionally in what I was saying. By throwing in an anecdote here and joke there, it kept everyone focused on what was coming next. In any toast, the bride and groom should be the center of attention.

Try injecting your speech with a joke or two in the right place. With this in mind, the best tip I can give you is to even out your funny groom speech. Balance the emotional parts and the funny bits together. You will actually find that you will be emotional yourself so by doing this it won’t just help the audience, it will help you too!

Another great tip is to be relaxed and informal with the audience. Remember this is a wedding speech not a lecture. You should be conversational as if talking to old friends, which will invariably be the case anyway.

Don’t forget to make eye contact with your guests; it will help you to interact them. Try practising before hand with your friends as a trial run, as it will help you improve your funny groom speech skills greatly and give you extra confidence.
